Once a Guernsey Girl…

2020

Graphite pencil, colour pencil, A3 paper.

This was produced as part of a project exploring how the workplace changed during the pandemic.

I decided to focus on my sister, who was born and raised in Guernsey, but just before the pandemic she moved to England to work for the NHS, having recently qualified as a paramedic. I wanted to produce this piece to show my huge respect for her carrying out such a stressful job under such extreme circumstances, particularly whilst being in unfamiliar surroundings and away from all her family. Although we knew her work in England consumed every moment of her time we knew, or hoped, that deep down her heart was in Guernsey and she was through and through a “Guernsey Girl”. To represent this, the pupils of her eyes are the shape of the island.
