“Hands, Face, Space”

2021

DSLR, Glitter.

This project was created during the pandemic. I wanted to focus on physical contact, which is such a natural human instinct, but with strict guidelines, being heavily enforced, forced us to rethink. One of the phrases instilled on us was “hands, face, space” – encouraging us to wash our hands, cover our face, and make space.

I wanted to explore ways I could show the indiscriminate spread of germs and how they were transferred in a way that wasn’t immediately obvious. I decided on using glitter as it is so difficult to get clean after it has spread around. It gets everywhere and you’ll likely be finding it for weeks. At the time this is what Covid felt like to me, knowing that it will always be around from that time on.
